We have designed and developed this site to inform patients about the high risk of colon cancer in North America and the medical community’s strategy for its early detection and prevention.

Open Access Endoscopy (OAE) is defined as the performance of endoscopic procedures requested by referring physicians without a prior full gastrointestinal specialty consult. (OAE) is appropriate when relatively healthy patients need screening colonoscopy, and an office based full gastrointestinal specialty consult may not be necessary. A basic history and physical exam will be taken just prior to the endoscopy for assurance of patient safety and appropriateness of the planned procedure, but should not be considered a substitute for a full GI consult.

Patients eligible for this "shortcut" to colonoscopy should be relatively healthy, active, and less than 70 years old. They shouldn't be taking anticoagulant/antiplatelet medications (coumadin, plavix, aspirin, etc.). They shouldn't have valvular heart disease, including mitral valve prolapse with a murmur, requiring antibiotic prophylaxis, etc. Patients with Diabetes on insulin should also first be seen in the office before colonoscopy. Patients are encouraged to call the office for any questions, and Dr. Hoefer will be available to meet with them in the office or talk to them on the telephone for questions or further explanations if desired. A small charge may occur for prolonged telephone consultation in preparation for the procedure.
